Interested in Becoming a Postdoctoral Fellow in my Research Group?

I am looking for highly motivated researchers who want to join my research group at the School of Computing and Information Systems at Athabasca University as postdoctoral fellows. Qualified candidates will be invited to work on a proposal which will then be submitted to a suitable funding agency.

Eligibility

Potential candidates must meet the following criteria:

Areas of Research

Adaptive and Intelligent Learning Systems
Research in this area focuses on designing, developing and evaluating techniques and mechanisms that consider different students’ characteristics, needs and situations (e.g., learning styles, motivational aspects, cognitive abilities, affective/emotional states and others) in order to provide adaptive and intelligent system capacities such as adaptive interfaces, intelligent support, and personalized recommendations.

Adaptive and Intelligent Support in Mobile/Ubiquitous Settings
Research in this area focuses on designing, developing and evaluating adaptive and intelligent techniques and mechanisms for mobile and ubiquitous learning, which consider context information such as objects/peers in the surrounding, environmental context, social context, etc. in order to provide adaptive and intelligent support.

Learning Analytics and Academic Analytics
Research in this area investigates the possibilities for using a variety of academic data for improving our understanding on issues such as effectiveness of learning resources and students’ learning processes. Furthermore, topics deal with designing, developing and evaluating tools that facilitate analysis, visualization and drawing conclusions from academic data, leading to benefits for course development, teaching, and learning.

User/Student Modelling
Research in this area aims at investigating and improving the automatic detection process of students’ characteristics such as learning styles, cognitive abilities, motivation, and affective/emotional states through the use of data from different sources such as sensors and user interactions with the system.

User/Student Modelling in Collaborative Settings
Research in this area aims at user/student modelling issues with particular focus on collaborative settings such as group works, with a primary goal on investigating and automatically identifying group characteristics, roles of individual students and their impact on the group, etc.

Context Modelling
Research in this area focuses on investigating and improving the automatic detection of context information such as location, items in the surrounding, and environmental context, using data from different sources such as sensors of a smartphone or other mobile device, user interactions with the system, existing databases, etc.

Artificial Intelligence in Education
Research in this area focuses on the usage, adaptation, and enhancement of artificial intelligence techniques to advance online learning and/or teaching.

Game-based Learning
Research in this area aims at designing, developing and evaluating educational games that effectively combine the gaming aspects with learning aspects to create games that are fun to play and where students learn effectively. Furthermore, this line of research includes the analysis of gaming behaviours in educational games, wiht the aim to personalize such games to different player types

If you are unsure whether your research and/or potential topic falls within one or more of these areas, please contact me at sabineg@athabascau.ca. I would be happy to further discuss with you about your research.

Application Procedure

Phase 1: Selection of possible candidates for an application at a funding agency

Please send the following documents via email to me at sabineg@athabascau.ca:

Deadline: ongoing

Based on the provided documents, discussion might take place to get more details about your application and to clarify what resarch will be done in the postdoctoral fellowship.

Phase 2: Application at a funding agency

Selected candidates will be invited to work on a full proposal which will then be submitted to a suitable funding agency. During this proposal writing process, we will have further discussions to concretize the proposed research and write a high-quality research application.

Deadline: depends on the selected funding agency
